Torrevieja Hospital, Alicante, Spain
Torrevieja, on the Spanish Costa Blanca, has been chosen as the site for an important new medical research centre run by American computer giant Microsoft.
Plans were announced following a meeting in the United States between Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Valencia regional president, Francisco Camps.
Valencia and Alicantewere also considered as possible locations, but in the end the Microsoft team chose Torrevieja for its good communication links, with two large airports at Alicante and Murcia close-by and easy access to the AP-7 motorway.
Another important factor is the newly opened Torrevieja Hospital, with its cutting edge technology and various initiatives already underway by the medical staff there.
“The facilities which Torrevieja Hospital provides are the ideal test-bed for new ideas and innovations,” said Francisco Camps, speaking at a press conference. “Torrevieja itself is perfectly situated from the point of view of communications and travel, with two airports within easy reach. With this new centre, I´m sure Torrevieja will soon become the new reference centre for health innovation throughout Europe.”
These sentiments were reflected by Valencia Health Minister Manuel Cervera, who commented that the choice of Torrevieja as the site of the new centre “highlights the role of the Community as a benchmark in health technology and demonstrates the high level of its health system making it a focal point as a European model.”
The centre is currently operating from Torrevieja Hospital while the council searches for a suitable location for the centre, a joint-venture between Microsoft, Telefónica and the CAM.

As part of their Corporate Social Responsibilty programme, TM Real Estate Group has offered to help organizers celebrate the XXI National Physics Olympics at the University of Alicante, Spain, this coming April 2010.
These unique “Olympics” are held each year in different universities throughout Spain and this year the organisers have chosen the University of Alicante, who will be providing all the necessary infra-structure for holding the event, including somewhere to stay for the 200+ participants from all over Spain..
The National Physics Olympics have aim to develop and improve contacts both national and International in the field of the teaching of physics at pre-university level, with the competitors being students of professional teaching & training.
TM Real Estate Group is one of the local companies sponsoring the event together with other organisations such as Alicante Town Hall and the Economic Guild of Alicante (Círculo de Economía de la provincia de Alicante) of which TM president Don José Luis Serna Almodóvar is also the current chairman.
